Broad Spotlight: Leah of By Travel & Error

First, we’d like to say thank you to all of you super awesome readers for your support and feedback that we received from our first CLE Spotlight on Shibani. We knew you guys would enjoy reading about our CLE buddies but we didn’t expect such a great response. We’re excited to continue to introduce you to our fellow CLE Broads and Beards! For our second Broad Spotlight, we talked to Leah Deppert from the By Travel & Error blog.

By Travel & Error is “a travel and lifestyle blog that shares lessons learned, experiences shared and stories created while wandering around our messy, yet beautiful world.” Leah started her blog in 2016 but the inspiration came long before. Read about the experience that led her to start the blog here (we always enjoy finding out the reason why people start blogging).  She is a life-long Cleveland resident and while she loves this city, she has definitely caught the travel bug. Leah not only writes about her favorite places but includes helpful travel tips, itineraries, packing lists and lots of other useful information.

Broad has gotten to know Leah from the CLE lady blogger meet ups Leah has organized! She has organized these get togethers at some awesome Cleveland venues (such as Southside, The Salvaged Boutique and the next one is at Stella & Shay).

What’s your favorite CLE restaurant when you’re on a budget? When you’re feeling fancy?
On a budget? Barrio! Don’t skimp on the chorizo queso though. Feeling fancy? Momocho. Can you tell I like Mexican food?

Favorite CLE food item?
I really love Rising Star’s coffee and the Juice Garden’s McNalty. (Yes, I realize those are both drinks!)

Go to meal when you’re cooking for yourself? For a group?
For myself? I Iike to make random skillets (think roasted veggies, orzo, cheeses, etc.).
For a group? I love to make big batches of soup like carrot ginger soup and zupa tuscano. Pick up a baguette from Blackbird Bakery or Breadsmith and it’s a delicious, warm meal.

What’s your favorite at-home drink?
My go-to drink is red blend wines but my favorite changes with the seasons! (i.e. around Christmas time, I was loving Watershed Distillery’s Nocino!)

What’s your favorite drink to order when you’re out?
I love to sip on mojitos and moscow mules.

What’s your favorite CLE bar?
I love all of our brewery options, especially Platform! They have a great atmosphere and patio.

Favorite Happy Hour?
My favorite happy hour is Whole Foods 5 after 5 because I’m thrifty, but here are a few other favs: By Travel & Error: Best Happy Hours.

What’s your favorite travel destination?
Ah…too many! I studied abroad in Seville, Spain, so that city will always have a piece of my heart. Last summer I went to Greece with two of my friends and it’s probably the most beautiful, lovely place I’ve ever been. I always tell people, if you can, go to Greece!

What would be your last meal and drink?
My mom’s beef bourguignon and a glass of expensive champagne.

Your friend is in Cleveland for one day, what should they do?
I’ve actually written about this a lot because I love CLE (read about it here and here)! West side market is a must, mixed with an outdoorsy activity like a hike in the MetroParks or a beach day at Whiskey Island! There is so much good food and drink in Cleveland, but I usually recommend a meal in Ohio City (SoHo is great) and drinks at Porco Tiki Lounge. Give Cleveland a chance and you’ll fall in love…that’s what I tell ‘em.

Special thanks to Leah for letting us interview her! Make sure to check out her blog here!
