Day 10 of the 3rd Annual Advent-ure Calendar
Day 10: Rhinegeist Dad Hoppy Holiday Ale
Based in Cincinnati, Rhinegeist has quickly become one of the most popular breweries in Ohio. They have a very extensive catalog of canned beers and have recently started churning out a lot of bombers (22 oz bottles) as well. If you like any sort of beer at all, Rhinegeist probably has something for you. Per their website: “This hoppy red ale balances crisp hops with juicy malts like a well worn flannel embraces the cold early dark days of winter. Notes of citrus and cherry life saver.”
REFLECTIONS
Beard & Broad
Beard: I’ve had many a Rhinegeist beer but only a handful have really stood out for me. Those that have though have been very good. This is a solid hoppy red, but borders on being too malty for me. If I were to build a Christmas beer sampler this probably wouldn’t make the cut, but I wouldn’t kick it out of my hand if it ended up there.
Broad: I’m a huge Rhinegeist fan and I don’t think I’ve had a beer from them that I didn’t like. This is a delicious IPA. It’s not overly hoppy but yet it’s not really wintery to me. Like the previous beer, I could drink this any day of the year not just at Christmas. Also, I LOVE the can.
Adam & Alex
Adam: To me, Dad is an IPA I can drink in that it’s not overly dry or hoppy. Nothing about it rings holiday to me other than the great can. If it was in a different can and called “Northwest IPA” I’d assume it was a yearlong standard IPA. Not my favorite type of beer but a good version of them.
Alex: Dad IPA has nothing particularly holiday like about it, but regardless, I find it enjoyable and would definitely drink it again. It tastes a little more malty than most IPA’s I’ve had to compare it to. Again I agree with the can being on point, I love a good plaid.
Scott & Christa
Scott: Here’s a beer that I plan to drink well past the Christmas season. It’s a malty red ale that’s smooth, flavorful and gets extra points for coming from the wife’s hometown. Excuse me while I go drink a few more of these in front of the fire.
Christa: I was very excited to add a Rhinegeist brew to our list! It’s from my hometown and so far everything I’ve tried of theirs is fantastic. Dad is no exception! I’ve come to find I am a fan of red ales, props to Beard and Broad for broadening my beer horizons. Much like yesterday’s selection, I don’t see what makes this a holiday beer but by golly, this beer is swell. Tuck your shirt into your jeans, wear your gym shoes no matter the occasion and pop a “Dad”. You won’t regret it.
Tony & Megan
Tony: Described on the can as a “Hoppy Holiday Ale”, the “Dad” by Rhinegeist lives up to its billing. Its hoppy but also has some malty flavors to balance it out. For someone who doesn’t typically like hoppier beers, the maltiness seems to mellow this one out nicely so I didnt mind this one. You dont get much “holiday spice” but thats ok it still has a holiday feel. With a simple, yet still festive can design this holiday red ale has a fun name, pretty good flavor and I wouldn’t mind drinking a couple more of these.
Megan: It doesn’t smell very strong but for me, I’m not a fan of the taste. I would say this falls into the hoppy and bitter tastes of some of the earlier IPAs we’ve had. I like the brewer and the play on dad’s flannel clothing but not a win for me. However, if I liked IPAs and other hoppy beers, I feel like I would like this one.
