Day 11 of the 4th Annual Advent-ure Calendar

Day 11: Millersburg Brewing Co. Edgy Elf

Gracie’s Favorite Beer

This is a brand new beer to all of us so we’re excited to try this one. This beer is described as a “Christmas ale made with cinnamon, ginger, honey, spices & everything nice. Lightly spiced ale with an attitude! Once you take a sip, this ale will keep you warm on the coldest of nights. With a cinnamon sugar rim & cinnamon spice finish, you might find yourself feeling a little edgy too!” Honestly, this kind of sounds like every Christmas ale description but we shall see how it holds up!

Reflections

Beard & Broad
Beard: I had no preconceived notions going into this one, which is exciting! I love new beers! The aroma is a nice blend of spices but nothing really discernible. It’s like every spice in this beer was added at the exact same ratio. It tastes like many other Christmas beers out there, but this has a bit more of a hop bitterness at the end. I’d really like to try this blind up against some of the other local Christmas beers because I think it would hang right up there with the classic standbys.

Broad: A new beer to try, how exciting! It smells like a regular spiced Christmas ale, which isn’t a bad thing. Upon first sip, I get a lot of honey and a slight metallic taste. I was hoping from the scent it would taste more spiced. Maybe it’s just my strong dislike for honey and my ability to always taste it when it’s present but honestly that’s all I taste. It’s not the worst, but it’s not the best. I would try this again, maybe on draft?

Adam: This beer is as forgettable to me as the can is ridiculous. I kinda get a smell of ginger but the flavor is basically nothing. It’s flat. It’s like the miller lite of Christmas beer. I drank this 3 minutes ago and genuinely can’t remember was it tasted like. Also side note- this beer has like one written review online. That feels impossible. Did we find a ghost beer? THE MARLEY BEER TASTED LIKE NOTHING, TO BEGIN WITH.

Alex: I agree with Adam that Edgy Elf is not a stand out beer.  It has a hint of spices, maybe ginger or cinnamon?  I doubt I would reach for this one again if I saw it.  It’s not bad, but it’s not really that good either.  To follow Adam up, We’re Marley and Marley.

Scott: I’ve never heard of this beer or this brewery and I’m so happy to report that I loved Millersburg Brewing Edgy Elf!!  The flavors are very subtle but really delicious and well balanced. I don’t recall who bought this beer for the tasting, but I’m raiding their fridge if they have any leftovers because this might be one of my new favorites.

Christa: Well this is what you call a sleeper hit! I haven’t heard of this brewery or this beer and was a little worried about it. Comical horse with a nose ring doesn’t necessarily inspire confidence. But, boy is this good. The holiday spices in this are subtle but I appreciate this. I get notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. It’s smooth and crisp and goes down so easy. So easy in fact I’d like 4 more. Three cheers for this one!!

Tony:  This is a new addition to the line up and I liked it a lot. Its interesting because its a lighter ale but you still get some good holiday spice flavors. I mainly taste the maltiness of the beer mixed with some cinnamon and maybe a couple other spices. A little bit of sweetness as well. Its very smooth, light, and easy to drink but also has pretty good flavor. I could drink a few of these for sure. And can we talk about the can?! Really fun design, cool name, good flavor, I enjoyed it!

Megan:  This is one of the beers on the Christmas list I probably knew the least about but oooh I like it!! It’s got Christmas spices and it’s so smooth! It’s sweet with cinnamon and caramel maltiness but not too sweet. The can is fun and it’s been a fun change to the line up from last year!
