Day 14 of the 4th Annual Advent-ure Calendar

Day 14: Urban Artifact Sliderule Chocolate Raspberry Gose

We’re so excited for this one because Urban Artifact specializes in tart and sour beers! Sliderule’s description states, “preceding the digital calculator, the “slipstick” was a conceptually simple method for quickly multiplying and dividing. Calculate your thirst. Sliderule has 750lbs Raspberries, 7lbs Sea Salt, 1.25lbs Coriander, and 150lbs Cocoa Nibs per 30 BBL batch.” From this we gather its going to be a delicious chocolate, raspberry gose and we welcome this addition to the list!

Reflections

Beard & Broad
Beard: Dammit this beer’s great. I’ve had quite a few Urban Artifact beers, so when I noticed this was their winter seasonal I was super excited. I get chocolate on the nose followed quickly by macerated berries, probably because this beer contains actual cocoa and real raspberries. Crazy. If you’re into sours beers, you’ll love this. If you’re not, you’ll probably not be a fan. I would highly suggest trying this and their other beers though cause they know what they’re doing and they do it well.

Broad: I have never had a bad beer from Urban Artifact probably because they make sours and those are my favorite. I was so excited to see a sour on the list. This one is super delicious. I’m always a huge fan of the chocolate and raspberry combo but of course I was a little leery of it in beer form. Of course it is super delicious. It’s not too sweet or sour it’s just right as Goldilocks would say. I definitely don’t consider this a Christmas beer or even a winter beer but I would happily drink this all year round.

Alex: OMG this beer is so good. I have never had Urban Artifact’s Slideule before. I feel like I haven’t actually had a sour in forever, so this is a welcome change. I can taste chocolate, raspberries, sea salt and of course my beloved coriander. I would say this is a good job of winterizing a sour and I love it so much. I would obviously drink this time after time.

Adam: Oh my god this beer is Incredible. It’s like a boozy version of black raspberry ice cream. Like a boozy milkshake. I could drink this forever. It’s the perfect amount of cacao nibs to sweeten out the sourness to make me want this all winter long. It reminds me of the sour fruit rings we used to have at Chanukah. No? Just me? Split religion house here.

Scott & Christa:
Christa: I can’t, guys, I can’t. This is not a Christina beer. This is a beer all of you will love, I just know it. I feel bad being negative because I feel like this a beer that would stand out in a crowd and impress all your beer snob friends but man, nope, nope, nope.

Scott: What a strange, but delightful beer from Urban Artifact. There’s almost nothing wintery about the Sliderule, except for the blue can. Despite that, I just like how different and unique the flavor is in this one. It has the tartness of a raspberry and I can taste the undertones of the chocolate, then you throw in the sourness of the gose style and you get the sliderule. I’m happy to say I’m a fan.

Tony
: I dont drink a lot of gose style beers but when I do, I like them. This one is very true to its description, you get the chocolate and raspberry and then a little sourness at the end. Its a nice departure from the more traditional holiday beers and I enjoyed it. My Grandma used to get chocolates with raspberries inside around the holidays so these flavors bring back some great holiday memories. I enjoyed this one!

Megan: I’m not a fan of fruity chocolate or fruity beer so I didn’t have much hope for this but I think they got the flavors spot on! Being a gose, it’s on the sour side but it’s also strong in flavors. You get the raspberry and cocoa initially and you’re left with a hint of coffee. For not being a fan of bitterness or sour, I don’t mind this one.
