Day 16: Goldhorn Brewing Misfit Toy Holiday Stout

Scout and her misfits

Yay, another new one! We’re surprised to get so many new holiday beers on this list, especially since we narrowed it down to just Ohio beers. Misfit Toy Holiday Stout is “not a traditional stout and not a traditional holiday ale. A dark & hearty stout brewed with rich coffee and spicy cinnamon.” This sounds delicious plus the can is amazing, one of the best designs we’ve seen yet.

Reflections

Beard & Broad
Beard: I like this. The idea behind this beer is a bit unique (coffee and cinnamon), but it doesn’t taste like anything crazy. That’s actually a very good thing. If this was packed with spicy cinnamon I’d absolutely hate it, but the spice is nice and subtle. It reminds me of a holiday blend coffee. When you pour this out of the can it produces a thick, frothy head which is exactly what I want to see with a creamy stout. I get a little bit of cinnamon up front and the finish is nice and roasty. Solid holiday offering!

Broad: I was excited to see another new beer on the list and was extra excited to see that it was a stout. I always want to drink stouts when it’s cold. This one is smooth, and I taste notes of coffee and a slight hint of cinnamon. I expected the spices to be a bit stronger and actually wish the spices came through a little more just to set it apart from the other stouts. I would definitely continue to drink this if presented with this beer, but I’m not sure if I would actively seek it out and add it to the Christmas rotation. It’s just not that different.

“Who you calling a misfit?!”

Adam & Alex
Adam
: I get a ton of roasted coffee notes with this beer both in the smell and the flavor. It finishes a bit chocolatey. I wish I was in the mood drink beer literally at all when i tried this because it’s delicious but i have zero interest in alcohol at time of drinking. I want to dive into this again when I’m not exhausted.

Alex: We’re on the Island of Misfit Toys…The can of Misfit Toy could be described as depicting the toys that will haunt your dreams for the rest of your life, but I’m going to call it charming.  I am also exhausted so my taste buds are not on point today.  I do think I like this beer.  I don’t really sense the cinnamon that is in the description on this, mainly I taste coffee and a slight smoky flavor. As per my holiday spirit animal, I’m a dear of a reindeer, why don’t I fit in!?

Scott: Misfit Toy is not the right label or name.  It’s a really pleasant stout with a moderate amount of winter spices to my taste.  After my mulligan on the Great Lakes stout (I admit, on second try I really enjoyed it a lot), I’ve brought back my love of all things stout.  This is definitely not a beer for everyone …*Christa*… but that’s why we do these reviews, right?  And in this case, I get to drink her leftovers so happy Sunday for me!  Good job Goldhorn, I’m a fan.

Christa: I was so excited to try a beer from Goldhorn Brewery, especially one with an adorable name like “Misfit Toy”. It boasts it’s something new and entirely different, not a traditional stout or a traditional holiday ale. It’s good, and I’m not usually a stout girl. I enjoy the coffee and cinnamon hints and the very smooth finish. But, I don’t think this is new or different. I’ve had holiday beers like this, I’ve enjoyed them. I was excited to try something new and different and exciting and was a little disappointed with this one. It’s good, but the only reason I cast it as a misfit is because it’s a bit “been there, done that.”

Tony: I freakin love this one! Wait you serious Clark? Yes I am. I love stouts and haven’t seen too many holiday stouts so this was an awesome find whoever contributed this one to the group. It’s smokey with some coffee flavors, and you also get a little hint of that “spicy cinnamon” they mention in their description. It warms you right up. Huge fan of this one and it makes me want to seek out more beers from Goldhorn.

Megan:  This is a nice stout! Full of coffee and smokiness, it’s a heavy dark pour and perfect for sitting next to a fire watching the snow fall. If we’re comparing stouts, I liked the Great Lakes oatmeal stout better but I do like this one! Two thumbs up 👍
