Day 16 of the 6th Annual Advent-ure Calendar

Day 16: Bookhouse Brewing Get Yer Oats Oatmeal Stout with Spices

Our group is collectively huge fans of Bookhouse so we are all happy to welcome a beer from them to the calendar. For those that haven’t been to the brewery, it’s adorable. It looks like a British pub, with wood and books everywhere. It’s the type of place where it’s a perfect way to start an evening, or to spend an entire day drinking good beer and reading a good book. From Bookhouse: “Our rich, soft oatmeal stout comes across as almost too much, too sweet and satisfying, so we dialed it back with a hit of Ceylon cinnamon and piles of toasted nuts: black walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts. Paired together, the whole thing is balanced and soft, with gentle wisps of nutty oatmeal, browned toast, and squishy caramel. Settle in for a spell and plunge these roasty black depths.”

Reflections

Ben: Oh holy hell this is tasty. I was expecting a heavy beer with all these ingredients listed, it’s anything but. This is exactly what I want in a stout and also a holiday beer: big, bold flavors without being too overpowering. It’s somehow both incredibly flavorful and still very well balanced. It has a nice roasty, nutty flavor and just the slightest hint of cinnamon. I think I could honestly drink this all night. Easily one of the best beers I’ve had all winter. I know Bookhouse rotates their offerings frequently, and I don’t think they’ve quite yet established a “Christmas beer” for themselves, but this is definitely a keeper.

Julia: I’m so excited to try this because I love Bookhouse and the can is really cute! When we opened the can I was a little taken aback because it came off as super boozy. Luckily, it doesn’t taste like that. It’s rich, smooth and perfectly balanced. I get notes of hazelnut, oatmeal and a tiny bit of cinnamon. I love stouts and this one just moved up on my favorite stout list. I’m not surprised that I love it because like I said, I love Bookhouse and they can do no wrong.

Adam: Get Yer Oats is one of the best new beers I’ve had in a long time. I am biased because I love big massive oatmeal stouts and this one is chock full o nuts baby. I get walnuts and pecans and maybe chestnuts along with the chocolate and oats. It feels more boozy than the 6.5% because it’s very warming. Absolutely adore this.

Alex: Get Yer Oats is simply delicious.  It’s a little smoky, and I feel like it tastes like toasted walnuts.  I also can taste a hint of cinnamon. Bonus points once again for a fun/cute can.  It reminds me of the squirrel from Christmas Vacation. So many good cans this year!  I will definitely have this one again!

Scott: I was so excited to get an oatmeal stout up next in the beer advent-ure and it’s so good.  It has warm flavors, a little spice, lots of nutty undertones and a great aftertaste.  This is up there as one of my new favorites!

Christa:
I am so surprised by how much I like this one!! I am not a stout fan and was actually dreading this one but it’s a very drinkable, enjoyable beer. I alway find I dislike the bitterness of a stout but it’s not present in this one for me. It’s subtly spicy and creamy, with a nice nutty finish. It’s one of those beers that warms you up while drinking. Big fan for this holiday season and will be trying this one again.

Tony: I’ve been waiting for this one! Mainly based on the description alone. It says its an oatmeal stout made with ceylon cinnamon, black walnuts, pecans and chestnuts. I mean if that doesnt intrigue you then what are we even doing?! 😆…I’m a big fan of stouts and I really like oatmeal stouts. This one pours SUPER dark, its basically pitch black. Now does the flavor live up to that magical description?….I think it does. I do get a little of the nuttiness along with the cinnamon. It finishes a little bitter but its not too bitter for my tastes. There is a slight syrupy element to it but again not so much that its a negative. I like it and if you’re a fan of oatmeal stouts I think you will enjoy this. Fun name, great can design, and unique flavors (you dont see walnuts and chestnuts mentioned very often). Didnt blow me away but I did enjoy it.

Megan:
I was looking forward to beard crumbs and this one because both are oatmeal stouts but they are very different. This is what I thought beard crumbs would taste like. It’s dark, thick and creamy. I get the nutty flavors and there’s no bitter aftertaste. You could very easily drink this with some fresh baked warm cookies while watching your favorite Christmas movie. This just says warm and cozy Christmas cuddles. So if you couldn’t tell, I really this one and I’d definitely get it again.

Brad:
I am a big fan of Bookhouse and tried really hard to like this beer. I waited to write my review until I finished the beer because I kept trying to tell myself it’s great, however, its not for me. It’s smooth like how I want an Oatmeal stout, but I’m not a fan of the smell or aftertaste. It smells like 2x4s. If you disagree with me then you don’t know what a 2×4 smells like. Our can also seems to have a carbonation issue since the beer tastes flat to me. I will continue to support the brewery because I love it there and I do plan on giving this another chance, on draft if possible.

Heather: Bookhouse’s Get Your Oats is a nutty, delicious stout that all around makes me happy. The can design is fun and whimsical, the beer is solid. I don’t taste a whole lot of holiday spice but I do think it’s warming, so that counts.
