Day 8 of the 3rd Annual Advent-ure Calendar
Day 8: Saucy Brew Works Three Ho’s
And we welcome another new beer to the calendar! It’s also from a new Cleveland brewery, a Christmas miracle! From the can: “Twas two months before X-mas and all through the land, all the brewers were brewing using only two hands. Our friend Nic had a more ingenious scheme, brew with four hands for a batch that’s a dream. Red and delicious with a hint of cinnamon spice. Great if you’re naughty, even better if you’re nice.”
REFLECTIONS
Beard & Broad
Beard: I’m a big fan of most of Saucy’s beers…but not this one. It feels like they had just started making beers at the end of summer and then were like, OH MAN MAKE A CHRISTMAS BEER! A bunch of cinnamon. Nutmeg I think. And is that mint? Not a fan, but I’ll continue to try their other offerings. Judging a brewery merely by their Christmas beer (or one beer in general) would be foolish, so I’ll just chalk this up to being rushed or perhaps an overly bold attempt to appease the spiced beer loving masses. I’ll look forward to checking this out again next year to see if there’s any adjustments.
Broad: I feel like this is the beer version of Fireball. The smell is extremely overpowering with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and every other holiday spice. The taste is even stronger. I normally enjoy spiced holiday ales but this one is just too much for me. I would like to taste this with half the spices, maybe that would make it better.
Adam & Alex
Adam: You know when you’re making spiced apple cider and you open a can of cloves and you smell it and you’re like MAN, that’s a lot of cloves. That’s what this smells like. And then you know when you decide just try that cinnamon challenge and then say MAN, that’s a lot of cinnamon. That’s what this tastes like. As amazing as this can is, I just couldn’t bear the amount of spice inside of it.
Alex: I’m fairly certain I know what the general opinion will be on this one. We enjoyed a lot of their beers when we checked them out when Saucy first opened, but I am not a fan of this. If fireball had a beer, this would be the recipe. It smells like spices. It tastes like spices, and I’m pretty sure my esophagus will be flammable for the next few hours. If the usual spiced holiday beers don’t quite do it for you, reach for Three Ho’s.
Scott & Christa
Scott: I will admit, it’s different and I might not be appreciating the flavor, but I want to be honest in my review. To be fair, super awesome can and I’m sure their other brews are fantastic…just not this one.
Christa: I appreciate what this is beer is trying to do. I do enjoy the cinnamon and nutmeg I am getting with each sip. It’s definitely a Christmas beer. It’s a little overwhelming for me, a little too sweet, but I would give them another chance in the future
Tony & Megan
Tony: Saucy Brew Works said “oh you want holiday spices?! Well we’ve got a surplus of cinnamon so here you go!” It hits you square in the nose. You smell the cinnamon and you taste it. Now, if you’re a fan of Fireball or that Hot Tamales candy then this might be the perfect blend of cinnamon and beer you’ve been looking for. It’s a little overpowering, but strangely enough I found myself continuing to drink it. I think most of it is driven by curiosity because it is so unique, which is a positive thing. It’s got that holiday feel and I like that its brewed here in Cleveland. I could drink one but it’s just a little too overwhelming on the cinnamon to go beyond that.
Megan: Holy cinnamon, Batman! This has all the holiday spice you’re looking for. If we’re comparing spicy beers, I prefer this to the Royal Docks Yuletide. It pulls off cinnamon without tasting like Big Red chewing gum. I’ve been interested to try this brewing company and their design is interesting, but this really packs a punch for a first try.
So you’re telling me this one was… cinnamony?
Eh just a little bit…
