Day 8 of the 4th Annual Advent-ure Calendar
Day 8: Sibling Revelry Pecan Brown Ale
Next beer up is from Sibling Revelry Brewing. Located in Westlake, Sib Rev, as the cool kids call it (do they?), was founded by a family of brothers and cousins. Wordplay for the win! They’ve been around since 2016 and have been going strong ever since. This Pecan Brown Ale is described as a “full-bodied American brown ale brewed with candied pecans, brown sugar and milk sugar. Smooth and nutty, this beer has a welcoming mouthfeel and a sweet finish.”
Reflections
Beard & Broad
Beard: I do enjoy the smell of this but it almost tastes like a light porter rather than a brown ale. It’s also much darker than a usual brown. Perhaps it’s the pecans? I get way more of a coffee note in here than pecans also. It’s fine but I’d prefer a more nutty flavor in a lighter beer. Fantastic can though, very pretty and wintery.
Broad: I am not a fan of this beer, nope not at all. The first thing I taste is coffee, but like beer that was in maybe old coffee filters. Guys, coffee is not listed as an ingredient in this beer, I shouldn’t be tasting it! I’m also not a fan of pecans so I would never choose a pecan beer. I’m also not a fan of brown ales. So I guess a combo of the two is a bit of a nightmare for me. As for the taste, I get hints of nuts and a lot of sweetness. It’s very dark in color but lacking in overall delicious flavor.
Adam & Alex
Adam: To begin with please know that I hold pecan pie above all other pies. Above all other desserts in fact. Pecan pie is a treasured treat to be savored. There is nothing like that perfect mixture of brown sugar, spices and crushed pecans. It’s genuinely the perfect thing.
Having said ALL that. This beer is not that. You know how when you were younger and you’d eat runts and you’d get that banana one and it’d taste manufactured? It genuinely had nay a trace of nanner. Even if you liked that runt (if you did you were a monster) you admitted that no, this does not taste like that yellow potassium fellow. That is this beer. Their “pecan and brown sugar” just tastes like syrup. It feels fake. This beer lies to us and is giving a bad name to the pie king of kings. Sibling makes some of the best beers in Ohio but when they miss they miss hard. I’m sorry, dear pecan. You deserved better my sweet nut prince.
Alex: Okay, I picked this beer out because I was drawn to the pretty blue can and the fact that I like pecans. I unfortunately do not like Sibling Revelry’s Pecan beer. It’s way too smoky for my taste and it no way resembles a pecan flavor in my opinion. It is very bitter to me and I was expecting something a little sweeter like a pecan dessert.
Scott & Christa
Scott: Coffee and pecans. Such a good flavor combination and not surprisingly Sibling Revelry makes it work in their Pecan Brown Ale. It’s not too carbonated, not too sweet, not too bitter and has a pleasant aftertaste. I’m happy to see this one become a regular on our annual beer review gauntlet.
Christa: When I took a sip of this beer I said “Aw, Nuts!” and Scott didn’t laugh but that’s show business baby. But, truly this beer is really nutty, with a hint of coffee. It wasn’t really my speed but I imagine it would appeal to many palettes. Go nuts!!
Tony & Megan
Tony: This may go against popular opinion among my fellow beer adventurers but I kinda like it. This is my first time trying this one and I thought it was pretty good. I like darker beers and some brown ales so it fits my profile. Brewed with pecans and brown sugar it tastes almost like a pecan pie, as their description says. Yes, it’s definitely sweet, but also has a little of that smokey type flavor that draws me to some stouts and porters. I know this isn’t one of those, but it has that type of a feel to me. I don’t know that I would drink a bunch of these but If you don’t mind sweet and you like brown ales, this is worth a try.
Megan: I may be in the minority here but I like it. It’s got a definitive nutty aroma and strong pecan taste. It may verge on a burnt nutty taste but I don’t mind it. It’s dark but not heavy. It’s Christmas inspired without being overly spicy. I could go for this.
