The Pizza Diaries: Edison’s Pizza Kitchen

Honey + Pizza????

For the last installment of the Pizza Diaries, we went to a new place, and it was fantastic.  We’re always happy to add a new restaurant to our rotation (there’s quite a few we haven’t been to), but we just couldn’t wait any longer and had to head to a favorite: Edison’s Pizza Kitchen. We promise we will get back to trying places we haven’t been before, and we’ll try all of your recommendations in due time, but this just had to happen. Sorry (not sorry).

Edison’s is a Tremont, and Cleveland, staple. No matter where we’re drinking in the neighborhood, we always end up at Edison’s for a pizza nightcap. Sometimes we’ll even start the day/night at Edison’s for drinking because the beer and patio are amazing, but we always end up back there for pizza.

When we order pizza at Edison’s, it’s usually by the slice. Actually before this visit, we had never ordered a whole pie. Our go-to slice is always pepperoni. The slices are large, greasy and covered in delicious tiny, slightly crispy pepperonis. It’s literally the most perfect slice, especially at 1 am.

Now here’s the thing about Edison’s: if you’re not familiar with them, they give you little honey packets for your pizza.  To Broad, this is absolutely insane and unnecessary. Honey does not belong on pizza, EVER. She really hates honey with the exception of (maybe) its addition in a good cocktail, and occasionally in her tea if she is really sick. She realizes she’s one of the few people who don’t like honey, especially on Edison’s pizza. Some people use the honey just for the crust and some for the whole pizza. Beard is one to use it for the crust. He thinks the combination of the spicy pepperoni, the crispy, greasy crust, and the sweet honey all just goes together in this weirdly perfect combination he can’t quite explain. Broad can explain it, and it’s with the word ‘gross’.

Alex & Adam

For this pizza journey we asked our friends Adam and Alex to join us. If you’ve been following us then you already know these two quite well since they usually accompany us on our beer journeys.  They describe themselves as pizza aficionados. Right now they’re not eating a lot of pizza due to their current living situation (they’re waiting for their new home in Lakewood to be built) and they’re very particular about their pies. But of course, they will still eat cheap pizza if necessary. Adam’s favorite pizza is a delicious Margherita pizza and Alex’s favorite is Edison’s mushroom pizza. Yes, they do just happen to be obsessed with Edison’s like us.

What we ordered:

  • A large pizza, half with mushroom and half with pepperoni.
  • Note: Adam and Alex are vegetarians.
no honey please

Sauce
We all agreed that the sauce was simple, tasty, yet not very memorable. This is not a sauce-forward pizza, which is great. Alex said it wasn’t crazy pants sweet and doesn’t distract you or get in the way of the rest of the pizza. Beard thinks it’s just zesty enough to be a compliment, and not a distraction to the rest of the pie.

Crust
Broad loves the crust, it’s one of her favorites. She wished there was some ranch to dip it in. Adam stated the sweetness of the honey and saltiness of the parmesan is just the perfect mix.  Adam uses the honey just on the crust and Alex doesn’t use any honey on any part of the pizza. Beard is a fan of using the honey on the crust as well and it’s one of his favorite parts of Edison’s (it’s like dessert!). Again, Broad says gross.

Toppings
The toppings are delicious. We agreed the mushrooms were cooked perfectly. We all liked how the toppings were on top of the cheese. We felt like there was an issue with the pepperoni on this pizza. Remember how we stated earlier that we love the tiny, crispy pepperonis on the slices? Well this pizza didn’t have the same type of pepperoni. We don’t know if they use different ones for the slices or what. This pepperoni was still good (because all pepperoni is good) but we much prefer the crispy tiny guys on the slices.

Cheese
Broad thought it was a good amount of cheese but she wants to try extra cheese. Adam thought there were some parts of the pizza that had more cheese than other parts so it wasn’t balanced perfectly but they shouldn’t lose points for it. Alex thought it was the right amount of cheese. Beard thought it was solid, and it has a good melty-ness factor going on.

Overall Experience
When we went during the day, it was perfect. There was no line and we enjoyed our pizza on the amazing patio. We kinda had the place to ourselves which is a rarity. If you go late night be prepared to wait and be patient. It is DEFINITELY worth the wait. Edison’s is a fun, quirky place with a huge selection of delicious beers so waiting is pretty manageable.

Next Day Deliciousness
Adam and Alex say the pizza definitely holds up the next day. Adam prefers to warm it up and Alex will eat it cold or hot. Broad agrees and the pizza is definitely still good the next morning and will eat it cold or warm. Beard thinks this is one of the best next day pizzas out there. He’s a re-heater, and the cheese melts perfectly and the crust crisps up nicely.

Final Rating
5/5 tiny crispy pepperonis. This is Adam and Alex’s favorite CLE pizza place. It’s one of Broad’s too, and Beard’s as well. Everything about the pizza is great. There’s no frills or fanciness to it, it’s just simple, good, greasy pizza. It hits the spot at all times and we want some right now.
