The Pizza Diaries: Ohio Pie Co.
We’re back with a new Pizza Diaries! We know it’s been awhile and we’re so sorry but it’s been hard to do this series with the pandemic happening. The other day, we happened to find ourselves in a city we normally don’t visit that is also home to one of the most popular pizza places amongst foodies: Ohio Pie Co. We had to stop there!
Ohio Pie Co.
Ohio Pie Co. opened their doors in February of last year, so they are still fairly new. Founder Nick Robson started Ohio Pie Co. because he was tired of Ohio not having their own style of pizza like New York, Chicago, etc. He created the Original Ohio Style pizza which he describes as, “Unapologetically flavorful and unique, with simple and sturdy crust made daily that’s built to handle cheese and toppings that run right to the edge. A signature sauce swirl and square cut that ensures no two slices or bites are the same.”
For this tasting we reenlisted the help of our friends Adam & Alex. You may remember them from our Edison’s outing. These pizza aficionados have cut back on their pizza intake during the pandemic, mainly because they just started getting takeout around mid-May. But, they were definitely up for trying a new pizza place when we asked them. Who wouldn’t be?
What We Ordered
We ordered a small, medium and large. The large can definitely feed 4 hungry people. The medium is great for 2 people, and you might have a couple slices leftover. The small is pretty standard, but perfect for a party of one.
- Bio-Dome aka Veggie: mushroom, onion, green pepper, black olive, banana pepper.
- Heartburner: two kinds of pepperoni, extra cheese, extra garlic oil.
- The Heart of it All aka The Deluxe: Pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushroom, onion, green pepper
- Party Bread: cheesy garlic bread made on their pizza dough served with a side of red sauce.
- Cookies: they sell cookies! Big, delicious, amazing cookies. We got frosted animal cracker cookie, salted caramel dark chocolate, and Nutella.
Sauce
The sauce on all the pizzas was the perfect amount, it was very minimal. We all agreed it was a bit sweet but it really worked with the toppings. Adam and Alex said the sauce didn’t stand out but it paired well with the veggies. We really liked how it was barely noticeable on the Heartburner, and was just to kind of hold everything together.
Crust
Adam described it perfectly that the crust was not too thick and it was chewy, in the best possible way. The toppings go all the way to the edge, so the crust is not the focus of this pizza…or is it? Because the cheese and toppings were nice and crispy way out there, we all thought it was the best part of the edge slices. The bottom of the pizza was also cooked perfectly.
Toppings
Adam and Alex loved the toppings on the veggie pizza, it was the right mix of veggies and the perfect amount. The deluxe pizza had classic toppings and was loaded up. The Heartburner was Broad’s perfect pizza: double pepperoni, extra cheese, extra garlic oil. Extra crazy good.
Cheese
As Broad stated above, the extra cheese was perfect. Alex said she barely noticed the cheese, but that’s not a bad thing. It didn’t stand out. Even the pizzas without the extra cheese had the right amount of cheese. Of course the cheese extending all the way to the crust for that crispy goodness was key.
Overall Experience
They’re doing takeout only right now. We called early on a Friday and it was ready in 25 minutes. We heard it gets SUPER busy, but the process was quick and easy. They have a display case at the counter with all of their cookies that were baked fresh that day, but you can also check out their instagram story for a current selection. They also have a great system set up for social distancing right now, so we felt super safe picking it up. The staff was very welcoming, nice, and helpful.
Next Day Deliciousness
Broad is the only one who ate it the next day (also late night). She warmed it up slightly and it turned out exactly how she likes her next day pizza. The toppings held up, it wasn’t soggy and the flavors were still fresh.
Overall Rating
4.5 Squares. The amount of toppings and how they run to the edge was perfect. Also, square pizza is where it’s at! The recommended pies are the way to go and the party bread was an excellent addition. The biggest downfall for us is the location. The drive to Ohio Pie Co. was a little over 30 minutes, so it’s quite a hike. But, good for the people of Brunswick! We’ll definitely stop again if we’re in the area. Final tip, and we can’t stress this enough: always get the cookies!
